That chill in the air? It means we’re entering the holiday gathering season. For those of us who think about wine day in and day out, it’s also a sign to begin thinking seriously about what bottles to pour at those festive events.

A word of warning: Not all wines are suitable for holiday gatherings. Appropriate bottles are crowd pleasers, able to bring together disparate groups of people who might not otherwise choose to imbibe together. They elevate feasts brimming with seasonal fare, whether that’s a glistening honey-glazed ham or a sizzled pile of oil-slicked latkes. Perhaps they have the potential to become a hot commodity during a heated game of White Elephant. They’re certainly worthy of being wrapped carefully and presented to a harried holiday host, who—let’s be honest—is probably in need of a drink.

Whether it be for Thanksgiving dinner or a black-tie holiday party, here are excellent bottles recommended by Wine Enthusiast’s Tasting Department—for every budget.

Woodlands 2017 Clementine Red (Margaret River)

From a single vineyard in Margaret River’s renowned Wilyabrup subregion, this Cab-dominant Bordeaux blend is a concentrated bottling that’s still, despite some age, a young wine. Classically structured, it opens with layers of evocative aromas from red currant and cherry to graphite, tobacco leaf, iodine and Garrigue herbs. The powerful palate is sculpted by powdery, savory, fine tannins and tangy acidity. There’s a level of austerity here now, but it should age with grace and beauty for at least a decade more. 95 Points. Cellar Selection  Christina Pickard
